Veritable Quandry - Portland, OR
How can one resist a name like Veritable Quandary? You don't. It's one of those things you don't resist, you don't show restraint, and you just go.
Veritable Quandary, or VQ as the locals call it, is a quaint and charming place in Downtown Portland just off the Hawthorne Bridge. I've been wanting to go here ever since I heard about it. It has a great atmosphere and offers both an indoor dining room and an outdoor patio. Although the outdoor patio is the place to be with the many florals and beautiful brick wall, the indoor "room" has glass walls that can be open wide to allow the freshness to come right on in. It's definitely a bucket list item since it's been around since 1971. You know a place has to be good to stick around for this long.
The Prof and I ended up at VQ for brunch. I was super excited to the try the eggs benedict. I love eggs benedict, but I know the hollandaise sauce and sometimes even eggs can be challenging to make. However, somehow I knew I was in good hands at VQ.
Feast your eyes! Everything was perfect. The homemade english muffins were definitely not your store bought muffins. They were light, fluffy and perfectly toasted. The slice of pork was tender and added a nice saltyiness to every bite. The eggs were perfectly poached and provided the very yoky-egginess I was craving. The potato hash was crispy on the outside while being warm and soft on the inside. And let's not forget the hollandaise sauce. It was, you guessed it, the perfect sauce to top everything off.
Please, please....please put VQ on your next trip to Portland. Do make reservations if you want to eat at a specific time, especially during peak hours like brunch. I called the day before and we ended up having brunch around noon. Brunch is good any time of day so it all worked out in the end.
