The Blind Rabbit – Jacksonville Beach, FL

Since this was our first visit back to Florida since leaving, my MIL wanted us to try this place she had discovered during her own foodie adventures. We knew we would be going to the Salt Life Food Shack for dinner so we ordered appetizers. The Blind Rabbit is a self-proclaimed burger and whiskey bar. Even though I had neither a burger nor a whiskey, what I did have was pretty spectacular.

I started out by ordering the Huckleberry Lemonade made with 44 North Huckleberry Vodka and fresh squeezed lemonade. I rarely order alcoholic drinks and when I do I always ask the bartender to make it light on the alcohol. He delivered nicely with this concoction. It was simple and refreshing and a nice balance of tart and sweet. I also had the Crab and Corn Chowder, which was simply amazing. It was thick, creamy and had a good amount of crab and corn.

The Gorgonzola Chips were next. The chips themselves tasted homemade and were perfectly salty and crispy. It was topped with melted gorgonzola cheese and a balsamic glaze. O to the M to the G!!! This was the most spectacular “nachos” I have ever had. The balsamic glaze was a nice consistency and balanced out the strong flavor of the gorgonzola. I fell in love and would eat this over and over and over again.

We also had Fried Green Tomatoes, which was the first time I’ve ever had them. It was a meaty slice of a tomato. The batter on the outside was crunchy and the goat cheese on top provided a tanginess that balanceed out the touch of sugar that came from the cane syrup.

As great and wonderful as the previous two appetizers were, neither came to close to matching the super uber splendid thing that was the Poutine, which were hand cut fries smothered in the ooey gooey goodness that was gravy with cheese curds, pork belly and short rib. Apparently Poutine is a common French-Canadian dish of fries topped with gravy and cheese curds. Before trying this dish and even reading the description I was hesitant to try it., Cheese curds with gravy?  But it was ah-ma-zing and I was pleasantly surprised by the pork belly and short rib mixed in with the gravy.

If the appetizers were this great, the burgers have to be just as good. I would highly recommend The Blind Rabbit and I may have to go back to try the rest of the menu.
