The Funky Door Wine & Bistro - Lubbock, TX
The Funky Door Wine & Bistro is a nice restaurant on a special occasion and such was the case for a mid-week birthday lunch celebration for yours truly. The Prof and I decided to take a random day off since my birthday fell on a weekend to have a nice afternoon to ourselves and do whatever I wanted since I was the birthday girl. I'm glad we went to The Funky Door because their food was fabulous as usual.
We started by sharing the Greek Nachos. The pita chips were super crunchy and nice change to just any normal chip you might be served. It's topped with three types of cheese - feta, parmesan and mozzarella - along with slices of pepperoni and olives and pepperoncini peppers. I'm not usually a fan of olives. They tend to taste very bitter, but it's strong flavor is balanced out by the creamy feta, tangy parmesan and fresh mozzarella. The Prof loves sharing the Greek Nachos.
For my main entree, I was looking to keep things light. I ordered the shrimp scampi, but it wasn't made with your normal pasta. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and served on a bed of veggie pasta made from squash and zucchini. The sauce was a simple olive oil mixed with fresh lemon. There was also sprinkles of garlic, shallots and parsley. It does come with red pepper flakes. I ordered a very light dusting of the red pepper flakes and it had just the right amount of spice to round out all the flavors. The sweet potato fries were crunchy and properly seasoned with salt. Overall I was very happy with my birthday meal because it was healthy and delicious.
The Funky Door is open for lunch Monday-Friday with a Saturday brunch (they're closed Sundays) along with being open for dinner. They are also known for their vast wine selection and you can find any type of wine you're looking for at any price point. The one thing I do like having is their fondue. Although we didn't have it this time around, I have been known to visit them just to share a one (or more) of their fondues.
