Fifty Licks Ice Cream - Portland, OR

Is there really anyone out there that doesn't like ice cream? Let me be honest with you for a minute. Even though I can be mildly lactose intolerant, nothing will stop me from enjoying some good ice cream. Fifty Licks is definitely one of those places you go for some good ice cream.

I first heard about Fifty Licks from watching a food show, which one I can’t remember. The show talked about the Nordic Palmer, which is an adult ice cream made with alcohol. The Nordic Palmer is made with Mead honey wine and a frozen lemonade sorbet.  I thought any place that mixed ice cream and alcohol has to be the place to go. 

I opted for something non-alcoholic and I was in ice cream heaven. I had two scoops: one of the Cherry Bomb ice cream and one of the Hibiscus Lime sorbet. The Cherry Bomb was velvety smooth and creamy. It had a mild sweet cherry flavor long with large bits of cherry mixed in. I could not believe how smooth it was. I’ve made ice cream at home and have never been able to get this consistency. The Hibiscus Lime sorbet was immensely refreshing. You could taste the floral notes from the hibiscus throughout the sorbet and it was nicely balanced by the acidity and tanginess of the lime. I thoroughly enjoyed both scoops.

One of the things I love about Fifty Licks is that you can sample pretty much every flavor. You can try any flavor you want before you commit to it. However, in the end it just makes your choice harder because everything is just so tasty! I sampled the Chocolate and Blood Orange Creamsicle. Both were again smooth and creamy and flavorful.

I highly recommend putting Fifty Licks on your Portland bucket list. It gets compared to another local ice cream place so I will have to go back to do my own comparison. However, I think I’ll find Fifty Licks hard to beat with their simple flavors and excellent texture.
