Apollo’s Bistro – Apollo Beach, FL
If you ever wonder how I end up where I do, I’ll fill you in on one of the ways. I wanted to venture out and go retro video game hunting for the hubs. Now that I travel not only will I use it an opportunity to try new food places, but I will also help build his video game collection. With that in mind I found a couple of places to visit within 20 mins from where I was staying and close by there was city that popped up on the map called Apollo Beach. That seemed like a good place to check out. I consulted Trip Adviser and selected the #3 spot for some reasonably priced seafood. There were key words in reviews that really swayed my decision, like “off the beaten path”.
After scoring some spoils at the video game store in Brandon I made my way south about 20 mins to Apollo’s Bistro. Apollo Beach seemed like a sleepy beach town. There was a Publix right at the corner of “The Blvd” and Hwy 41. There were also other local food spots I passed along the way. I may have to add those to the list as well for the next visit.
I can see why this place is off the beaten path. It’s tucked away at the dead end of a small street and attached to the Apollo Beach racquet ball club. It was quiet with a few tables occupied and I was greeted and seated right away.
One of the reviews raved about the lobster bisque so of course I had to start with that. I was expecting the bisque to be a bit thicker. It seemed more like a soup than a bisque. However, the lobster flavor was present throughout the dish and it had a good balance of flavor with the sherry. It also came with a small side of bread and butter.
For my entrée, I asked what the specials were and thought I would be trying a fish I’d never had before. I can’t even remember the name of it, but it would have been a meaty kind of fish. Unfortunately it really wasn’t a special that night so I opted for my original choice, the seafood risotto. Risotto can be difficult to pull off and I was very pleased. There was lobster or shrimp (or both!) in every bite. The risotto itself was al dente and had a good creaminess that was accentuated by the parmesan cheese. I also enjoyed the addition of mushrooms and spinach.
